sorry. i was a little restless earlier and i found that...
Anyway, here's the final housemate, Mark:
1) Do robots cry?
Mark: Whot whot whot?? I hope they sprung for the rust coating then.
2) You're invisible for a day. What's the first thing it occurs to you to do?
Mark: oooh! My ultimate dream! I would have so many good things to say when I actually dated my ex-girlfriend, Erica. Well, not really, actually. Problem is, I don't think I really care enough about what others are saying about me behind my back, so it wouldn't be much fun to hear what they have to say. Ugh - I wrote this without thinking. Anyway, it might be practical to hear stock secrets from some big shot analyst. Aah. So I also want to hear what Ford's future model plans are, so I might sneak into Bill Ford's strategic planning meetings.
3) You are a muppet. Which one are you?
Mark: Fozzie because he is way scatterbrained and idiotic. Beeker too. Because he looks cool.
4) Describe your worst non-sober experience.
Mark: Biting during sex.
5) What's your fondest memory from the first 10 years of your life?
Mark: Being slapped by sister Rita during catechism class. No - actually it was absolute hell. I really liked play w/ my best friend Gregory. We were cheetahs. And then wehn I was in kindergarten and the 5th grades made me kiss my little friend Catherine "using our tongues"
6) What's the best book you can recall reading?
Mark: The Beach. No - just kidding. Catch-22.
7) What song do you most like singing along to?
Mark: "True Faith" New Order
8) What amuses you most about the English (or just me...)?
Mark: "Paaasta, yeah" No - not that. I like how 'you english' often use lots of words *or maybe it's just chrissy* when you are nervous. I also like how you pronounce the word 'herb': "because it has a fucking 'h' in it." Oh, and how you order pizza when you are drunk - "Large!" "small!" (edit: insert hand gestures here...)
9) Who do you think would win a fight between 2 robots called "John Walker" and "Kieron Gillen"?
Mark: Kieron Gillen because he sounds more robotic and ripped.... I HAVE A.D.D. (that's from Eddie Izzard, not me)
well
that's mark. i should probably mention that i did make everyone fill these in when they were pretty damn hammered.
before you get worried, john and kieron, there are three more housemates downstairs who will decide the battle. it wouldn't be real if it wasn't drawn out. much thought and alcohol has gone into these answers.
anyway.
have a good weekend, folks... walker: write something for jim. jim: i'm sorry i called a pavement a sidewalk. people in england: i'm so glad you have snow. snow is fun. snowballs are fun. if anyone wanders through the park in bath, go and look at my friend james building snow sculptures and say hello.

Today was a good day. "I'm a consumer baby, so why don't you kill me..." Newbury Comics is a great store. Music, DVDs, random random shit. it's the sort of place people like me would need shopping trolleys.
Anyway. Have to replay the following, because it made me laugh (sorry Zoe, just scroll down...):
My workmates and I are all going out for a Mexican next tuesday. As I set it up, I tried to call to book a table:
---"Hi - please can I book a table for half six on Tuesday?"
*pause*
"For when?"
---"For half six next Tuesday."
*longer pause*
"WHAT?"
---"Um... for
HALF PAST SIX NEXT
TUESDAY?"
"Ohh... so, like, you mean six-thirty, right?" (Apparently half-six = 3, which is just plain wrong... to this girl anyway...)
---"Oh I'm sorry - yes please."
"Okay, so, Tuesday, six-thirty, how many people?"
---"11 people."
"I'm sorry, we don't take reservations for that number of people."
---"How about 12?"
"No, I mean we only take reservations for groups of over 20."
---"Oh. I see. So... do we... uh... um... how does..."
"You can still come. You just walk in and sit down." (voice in her head saying "jackass")
---"Right. Thank you very much. Bye."
"Goodbye, have a nice day now." (voice in her head saying "you british asshole")
*click*
I shouldn't be allowed to phone ANYone. Ever.
Still. It made me laugh. (though clearly i'm embellishing a little...)
I'm going to skip the melancholia from now on. No one wants to read that shit. Especially me. So just the funny stuff will do...
Tomorrow I'll tell you about the guy calling from Texas about his non-fiction on blind children.
And then tomorrow tomorrow you can meet mark. It's chris's actual birthday today, so I don't have time to go dig up mark's questionnaire and type it out.
Anyway. Later...

so, i'm not coming home in april. i'm going to go to canada for the weekend instead.
i'd only be able to come home for one long weekend. i'd be completely jetlagged. it would cost loads more. i'd feel tired and totally like shit. the only benefits i can think of are seeing my parents, and seeing my friends in bath for an evening.
huh.
now, the first one i can live without. as my dad put it "we didn't see you for 6 months when you lived in cumbria either..." the second one though - that's a pretty big benefit that i'm turning down, no matter how irritating the jetlag.
thing is though, i don't want to just see people for a weekend. i want to see my bath friends all the time, like normal. (apologies for folk reading this not in Bath by the way; i miss you too, but i guess i'm more used to seeing you guys infrequently - i've already gone through a big missing you dreadfully thing after moving away from you the first time). so, i have this feeling that coming home for a quick weekend will only make it worse - this nagging feeling like i'm standing next to my life rather than being in it. and this nasty feeling of missing people.
i want kieron to dance with to the yeah yeah yeahs, i want john to try and freak me out with his mad crazy wide-eyes, i want alec to laugh with because he has a really good laugh when he chooses to use it, i want beccy to talk with about kicking boys, jonty to steal alcohol from and tell drunken stories to late at night, jim for cuteness and winking, tony and emma to talk about poetry and cats, stuart to rant with, zoe to drink with, not to mention about a million other people, not least of all watching my almost-nephew james crawl about the carpet trying to pull himself up and make word-like noises.
ooof.
i guess i just wanted to say that i want to come home that weekend, and that in the meantime i want to see everyone now, but that i'm not going to do either of those things.
i really am having fun out here though - this isn't a poor attempt at trying to cover any random depression or anything... i'm having a lot of fun and i'm just a little melancholy at the same time. pah. that's pretty standard for me really...
anyway.
final housemate tomorrow, before we move on to the guys downstairs... i'll see you in five months.
Monday, February 23, 2004
my office is full of bats.
actual bats.
huh.

lots of drinking last night...
i've been trying to compose this entry in my head for days. i'm not getting very far. since dad asked me on the phone if living in my house was like living on 'Friends', i feel like i need to get this out of my system.
america is not different at all to britain. or, to be precise, boston is not different at all to britain.
it's kind of like going to stay with your friends who are more well off than you, who have a bigger tv screen than you, and lots of digital channels, and a much better sound system hooked up in the living room. they have good computer games. they have broadband. they even have a digital camera they bring out at parties. it's always a fun weekend when you go to stay with them... they have lots of toys to play with.
and maybe they're from a different part of britain. and maybe they have a different accent to yours. you might lose the occasional phrase, though you can still get the gist of what they're saying by the context.
and with all of the gadgets and toys, there's also a poorly disguised air of discontent. people are cynical. people laugh at stupid people. people are stupid. people are incredulous. people rant. people get pissed off. people care. people are people. just like at home.
if we have a freakish, random stereotype of stupid americans, can you imagine how much worse it is every day to know that they're the same nationality as you? it's something like going into a divey pub in the London daytime and suddenly realising in horror that you're in a bar full of 'Daily Star' readers. it's not like America has a monopoly on cretins. they have Pop Idol over here, and they got THAT piece of crap from us in the first place...
i don't know. i don't mean to rant at you. who do i want to tell this to? my parents, i suppose, mostly
god bless america. it's not like a tv show.
although i have heard that southerners are all fucking insane...

as a very random aside to the whole american experience - some cool news that will interest folk i was at university with (if you don't already know it): i've just heard that my Brynmill housemate Olly and his girlfriend kirsty are getting married. woo-hoo!

Hey guys, this is John:
1) Do robots cry?
John: no
2) You're invisible for a day. What's the first thing it occurs to you to do?
John: get naked
3) You are a muppet. Which one are you?
John: skeeter / the guy who wears the sunglasses
4) Describe your worst non-sober experience.
John: taking acid for the final time
5) What's your fondest memory from the first 10 years of your life?
John: catching a potential game-winning home-run in the last game of the season in little league baseball with my eyes closed
6) What's the best book you can recall reading?
John: the bible (that book is hilarious)
7) What song do you most like singing along to?
John: the "thong song"
8) What amuses you most about the English (or just me...)?
John: the way you perceive americans
9) Who do you think would win a fight between 2 robots called "John Walker" and "Kieron Gillen"?
John: "John Walker" because "Kieron" Gillen sounds like an evil villain robot and everyone knows that the villains always lose in the end

since i arrived here i have been getting electric shocks off absolutely everything. EVerything. of particular note are the lightswitches. a plastic casing, held in place by two metal screws just above and below the switch itself. every morning i get up and it shocks me just to turn the light on in the bathroom... i've actually had to start cautiously turning lights on and off like nipples so that my fingers don't make any contact with the screws. this has a rather comical effect, as i'm sure you can imagine.
what is less comical is that now i'm starting to feel like a rat in a science experiment. all the shocks are definitely affecting my behaviour, as i now always roll my sleeve down over my hand in order to do things like open the fridge, or open the door to my office and the bathroom. if i'm wearing short sleeves, what tends to happen is that i hover around by the door, summoning up the courage to open it, putting my hand almost to it, backwards and forwards, in some kind of mental patient hand hokey-cokey.
apparently it's because the air is so dry over here, and because i wear a lot of "natural fibres". so. my mother WAS wrong all these years. i will go to the store after work today to buy some polyester, nylon, and other similar man-made tops. this basically boils down to me having to look like an american from now on, and wear sweatshirts.
great.
on another note, i've already been to see this twice over the weekend:
go see it as soon as possible. it's brilliant.

fuck it...

us outside on the porch. it's great the photos you can take when you're hammered out of your skull...
edit: oops. i was so hammered i don't remember that i didn't take that photo. bil did. arse.
good photo...

oh dear.
chris broke our living room last night. will post photos when i get home. if i get home. today will be a long day.
i recall getting chris onto the floor and pinning him down to prove i wasn't a "pussy". i also remember having a conversation with two of my housemates about how soon american girls are allowed to have sex with people they're dating.
oh dear.
oh dear.

my walk to work every morning takes 15 minutes, and i have to cross davis square on the way. it's pretty cute, although i didn't think so at first. at first it just looked like an intersection of roads, with a bank and a dunkin donuts - not all that impressive. but, actually, now i've gotten used to it, i'm noticing the other things - the random clothes shops, the random bookstores, the lovely, lovely liquor store called "Downtown". (where are you going? i'm going downtown, baby...) the square is really pretty at night too, all the little trees that surround it have yellow fairy lights up - it's cute. the old somerville theater in the corner adds a little character too.
of course when i first got here it confused the crap out of me that none of the squares here are actually SQUARE. they're mostly just huge intersections. eesh... but now, well. will try and take a photo sometime, but i'm sure i won't be able to do any of them justice. it's all retail cuteness you see (welcome to america), rather than anything aesthetic exactly. now that i'm used to what stores there are, and all the little random shops, each road has a different feeling for me. still the same old polluted paved shite... it just 'feels' nicer. (that makes it sound bad - it's not meant to. note to self - don't use the word "shite" when being complimentary)
what else...
home life is beautiful. we have a fridge that Superman AND General Zod AND the woman AND the big furry stupid one could hide in all at once. now i know why they make those large tropicana cartons so damned big - because that's the size of the fridge shelving we British may only dream of. we also have a MASSIVE dishwasher. this is a wonderful, wonderful thing. even my laziness can afford a little lighthearted stacking every now and then...
then there's a washer and a drier in the basement. oh jonty, jonty, long gone are the days when i would come home shitfaced and decide to breathe second-hand smoke over our slowly moulding/drying clothes, which need somewhere between 36-48 hours before they approach wearability due to our heating "issues". the washer here takes 30 minutes, the drier takes a little under an hour.
oh i am in love...
(i do miss you jon, just not the clothes airer... NB don't get used to Tim - Tim is evil - I'm coming back - don't get used to Tim)
but what does it get me? - i get all this extra time to flick through tv channels and find new episodes of 'The Family Guy' and old episodes of 'Batman' (pow! krash! zing!). ach... going to a club this weekend though. am going to a St Valentine's Day Massacre, at a place called
The Middle East, which I suspect I will rather enjoy. i even bought new red shoes for the occasion. red is appropriate for this particular holiday. it's romantic. it's also kinda slutty. Thundercats-HO!
will let you know what fun is had...

4) Describe your worst non-sober experience.
Chris: Breaking my ribs. I went from extremely drunk to not being able to

Well, I smelt my first skunk last night. One got run over right outside our house. Someone cleared it up before i had a chance to take a photo. quite a relief really. we were all smelling it for the next couple of hours. probably wouldn't have been wise to get so close. skunk smells in your nose and the back of your throat are kind of like having pop idol in your eyes going into your brain.
pure evil.

well, you'll have to meet chris tomorrow. i just need to upload his photo for you... in the meantime, here is some light entertainment courtesy of the Fox channel. these are two of their brand new shows:
the first is
The Great American Celebrity Spelling Bee which stars none other than the lovely Alice Cooper. The main caption was "Great American celebrities may well be able to afford liposuction... but CAN THEY SPELL IT???"
second is
The Littlest Groom:
it's unbelieveable. it's a midget/little people "batchelor" dating show. captions include:
"He's a little guy, but he's big where it counts -
his heart..."
"Because life's just too short to miss..."

today we went into chinatown.
now there's a crispy duck whose beak you could break off in one swift move...
it's kinda small, only a couple of blocks square, but it was quite cool. we went and ate too. at about half past 4. again, i now have enough aubergine to last me the next few days. it's great. i thought i was joking, but i really do just order takeout every few days, then live off it til the next time (more or less). plus it's all pretty cheap. not to mention tasty. and seeing as i'm veggie, it's relatively healthy stuff too.
excellent.
so what news... our toilet is broken. actually, rather embarrasingly, it was me that finially killed it. but it'll be fixed tomorrow so that'll be nice. don't worry. i won't show you photos...
yesterday mark and i took our cat jasper to the shelter. mark is allergic, so we had to find homes for jasper and his sister daisy. daisy has a home, but jasper has been left high and dry. and daisy is the one that took a shit in my room. oof...
it was actually a really traumatic experience - trying to explain to the man how lovely jasper is, and how friendly he is, and how he loves people. basically they assess the animal and as long as he's not sick or too old, they put him in a cage for people to look at. if he doesn't get found a home in the next few months, they kill him. only they don't say "kill", they say "euthenizing". he will be euthenized.
anyway... will introduce you to chris tomorrow.
Saturday, February 07, 2004
Well, it's time you met the first housemate. (I told you this was The Real World, right?) This is Bil. Everyone say hi to Bil. below are his answers to questionnaire all the housemates have filled in. i was very schoolmarmish. they all did it in isolation. while i drank my red wine and ordered the HEAVIEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD.
Bil:
1) Do robots cry?
Bil: depends on the model
2) You're invisible for a day. What's the first thing it occurs to you to do?
Bil: robbery
3) You are a muppet. Which one are you?
Bil: the talking shrimp from Muppets In Space
4) Describe your worst non-sober experience.
Bil: my first chat with an ex-girlfriend while stoned on opium after avoiding her for weeks
5) What's your fondest memory from the first 10 years of your life?
Bil: molesting the babysitter
6) What's the best book you can recall reading?
Bil: La Vita Nuova
7) What song do you most like singing along to?
Bil: Hard to believe we're in heaven
8) What amuses you most about the English (or just me...)?
Bil: small island - big attitude!
9) Who do you think would win a fight between 2 robots called "John Walker" and "Kieron Gillen"?
Bil: with so little to go on, Kieron because he's so unusual.
So there we have bil, housemate number one. You'll meet more soon.
I have stories to tell about doctors surgeries and cat shelters. they don't say "killing" here, they say "euthanising". how cute. that'll do for today though.
*cough cough cough*
Thursday, February 05, 2004
well, i promised pictures. i'm sorry. i've been rather ill. i'm finer now though - at least half a lung is recovering. anyway. this is boston. nice, uh?
i particularly like the trainers slung high up in the branches of the tree...
thank you mr walker, for letting me put photos up. this is just a warmup. glow in the dark jesuses (what the fuck is the plural of jesus? - jesuae?) and such like will follow when i get home tonight. sorry about the darkness. will try and sort that out before subsequent posts...
as i said, i've been ill. and i've discovered that there are two types of cough medicine sold in my local pharmacy. the first type has booze in it. the second type doesn't, and has speed in it instead to replace the booze.
my recovery has been far from ideal.
you can meet bil over the weekend. he's the housemate that put the ad up on the internet and kindly sorted lots of things out for me, including letting me use his computer to do this kind of stuff on.
i'd forgotten about people being kind. "i have always depended on the kindness of strangers." you don't notice as much when it's your friends - friends are friendly (well, unless they work for Future, largely - mwa-ha-ha) what i mean is, when strangers are kind to you, it means so much more because you're in an unfamiliar place. someone told me boston is a city of assholes. maybe it is. but i haven't met any yet.
still, i've only been here 10 days, heh heh...
Sunday, February 01, 2004
well, today was superbowl sunday. and the new england patriots just won it. they're kinda like the home team here. so there are lots of people yelling and whooping, (i think our roommate jay has just been run over actually - i hear a lot of cars beeping) although i've been told that in town, people will be flooding the streets in much more drunken delight. wish we weren't so hungover or else it would have been cool to go out and join them. the quarterback said "now don't you tear that city apart tonight" in his speech. boston will be messy tomorrow.
i hate to admit it - i'm a rugby girl - but it was actually a pretty good watch. i've heard all the jokes about how they're only playing half the time of a rugby match, and how it's like rugby only with girlie padding, but it was pretty good. the pats beat the panthers by kicking a goal in the last 9 seconds of the whole thing. it was crazy. the whole last quarter was pretty good in fact, high scores oscillating between teams in a very suspenseful manner. it was good. i feel dirty.
of course i think i saw more adverts than i did actual game time. plus the half-time show was ludicrous. jason timberlake ripped off a little piece of janet jackson's top, while nelly and p diddy were both taken seriously by all present. still, best bit of all for the boys - beyonce sang the national anthem.
the car horns have stopped, so i can only assume that jay has managed to drag himself over to the curb now. best go see if he's conscious or not.
